NON-FINITE CLAUSES IN THE INTRODUCTION SECTION OF SKRIPSIS AND RESEARCH ARTICLES

ABSTRACT
Non-finite clauses are clauses which have no tenses. This research aimed to find
the forms and the functions of non-finite clauses in introduction section of skripsis
(ISoS) and research articles (ISoRA) in English field. Research articles were used
to identify the ideal forms and functions of non-finite clauses. Content analysis
was used in this research. The ISoS and the ISoRA were selected randomly. The
first step in analyzing the data was identifying the forms and the functions of the
clauses, counting the percentage of the data, discussing the findings by
interpreting the data, and conducting a conclusion by explaining the result. The
findings showed that there were three forms of non-finite clauses in the ISoS and
the ISoRA. The forms were present participle, past participle, and to-infinitive. In
the functions, there were non-finite clauses as minor clause, qualifier, epithet,
non-finite clauses as conjunction, non-finite clauses after conjunction,
circumstance, prepositional phrase, actor, goal, carrier, attribute, possessive,
identified, identifier, phenomenon, behaver, and existent. The ISoS were frequent
presented non-finite constructions as minor clauses. The ISoS had more non-finite
clause constructions in clause simples rather than clause complexes. It was
different with the ISoRA, the ISoRA had less non-finite constructions as minor
clauses and had more clause complexes. The non-finite constructions in
introduction section of skripsis and research articles made the clauses dense. It
concluded that the witers of the ISoRA used non-finite clauses more proficient
than the writers of the ISoS because not every language has non-finite
constructions.
